Emirates commit to offering trailblazing inflight broadband on board Boeing 777X aircraft with GX Aviation

The world’s largest international airline intends to use Inmarsat to accelerate its digital transformation

Emirates has committed to Inmarsat’s advanced GX Aviation connectivity solution to provide ground-breaking inflight broadband on board its Boeing 777X fleet. The airline, which flew 56 million passengers across 156 destinations in 83 countries last year, has 150 Boeing 777X aircraft on firm order, with deliveries currently scheduled from 2020.

The deal would be part of a growing partnership between Inmarsat and Emirates, which already operates Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband service on most of its Airbus A380s. With Emirates currently flying the largest Boeing 777 fleet in the world, this statement of intent reinforces Inmarsat’s position as a market leader in inflight connectivity, and strengthens the company’s growing presence in the Middle Eastern market.

Combining innovation with excellence

Emirates has long been known for its outstanding inflight entertainment. It won ‘World’s Best Airline Inflight Entertainment’ at the Skytrax World Airline Awards in 2017, an accolade it’s won 13 years in a row. And, with Inmarsat’s game-changing connectivity, its set to get even better.

GX Aviation is the world’s first inflight connectivity solution with reliable, seamless high-speed global coverage provided through a single operator. It allows passengers to surf the internet, stream videos, movies and live TV, as well as check social media and much, much more during flights, with onboard connectivity comparable to the mobile broadband services they may receive on the ground.

Prioritising a digital transformation

The deal also comes after the airline saw a 200% increase in mobile bookings during 2016 through its downloadable app – which is available in 18 languages. It supports the fact the passengers want to remain connected, as Inmarsat’s recent global Passenger Survey showed. And Emirates is listening.

Emirates will use inflight entertainment and connectivity infrastructure provided by Thales – and connected by GX – including a live TV offering. Emirates’ aircraft will connect to the GX network using high-efficiency JetWave terminals produced by Honeywell Aerospace, which will be integrated as a line-fit option.

The only aviation broadband provider capable of connecting the complete aircraft, from cabin to cockpit, Inmarsat’s world-leading passenger solutions are complemented by its trusted industry standard safety and operations services.
